Senators file Resolution calling for an inquiry on EJKs
Seven senators hit fake news

Left out by the authors of Resolution No. 516, seven senators, namely Sen. Pres. Pimentel, Villar, Honasan, Zubiri, Gordon, Sotto and Pacquiao, filed Resolution No. 518 seeking an inquiry on the rising extra-judicial killings or EJKs.

A blog had published a so-called fake news, with hashtag #SilentNoMorePH , which made it appear that the seven senators purposely refused to sign Resolution No. 516 calling for an inquiry on EJKs especially on deaths of juveniles. The fake news was authored by someone who was not part of the media assigned to the Senate beat. The same item carried common wordings as three items in three newspapers, but which did not originate in the Senate press office. Thus, the matter of the fake news was referred to the committee on Public Information and Mass Media.

The recently filed Reso. No. 518 drafted and authored by Zubiri was signed by 16 senators namely Senate President Koko Pimentel, Senators Angara, Binay, Ejercito, Escudero, Gatchalian, Gordon, Honasan, Lacson, Legarda, Pacquiao, Poe, Recto, Sotto, Villanueva (on leave, will sign) and Villar.

Zubiri filed Resolution No. 518 condemning in the strongest sense the extra-judicial killings and calling on the government to exert and exhaust all efforts to stop and resolve these extra-judicial and all other unresolved killings.

Zubiri was alarmed "that only six cases have been brought to the courts by the Department of Justice when confronted with the exceedingly large number of deaths." He quoted PNP statistics which said 3,811 persons had died in anti-drug operations. The police had carried out 70,854 anti-drug operations and arrested 107,156. The PNP Website reflected statistics gathered by the police nationwide from July 1, 2016 to August 29 of this year.
