Special working holidays nationwide get Senate nod

The Senate today approved on third and final reading 13 house bills declaring special working holidays nationwide.

Sen. Ferdinand "Bongbong" R. Marcos, Jr., sponsor of the proposed measures, said the house bills were originally filed as "special non-working holidays" but the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) registered reservation citing that "additional non-working holiday each year would mean a day's wage lost to our salaried earners."

In commemorating historical events in the provinces, cities and municipalities, the DOLE proposes the option of special working holidays to promote productivity and competitiveness, according to Marcos, chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Government.

House Bill Nos. 103, 3962, 3968, 3969, and 5552 proposes a special working holiday and no class day in schools on June 23 in Bacoor City, April 16 in Marikina City, June 21 in Tagaytay City, June 30 in Imus City and February 13 in Parañaque City respectively in commemoration of its founding anniversary.

On the other hand, House Bill Nos. 3945, 3964, and 4799 proposes to declare July 4 in Lanao del Sur, March 9 in Abra, and September 1 in North Cotabato respectively as special working holidays and no class day in commemoration of its foundation day.

House Bill Nos. 4565 and 4797 proposes a special working holiday and no class day on May 8 in Hermosa, Bataan and on October 31 in Porac, Pampanga respectively in commemoration of its founding anniversary.

House Bill No. 3973 proposes to declare September 29 as "Araw ng Bacoor," a special working holiday and no class day in Bacoor City while House Bill No. 4646 proposes to declare December 29 of every year as "Jose Calugas Day," a special working holiday and no class day in Leon, Iloilo, in honor of Capt. Jose Calugas. Calugas was the first Filipino winner of the US Congressional Medal of Honor during World War II in the Battle of Bataan.

House Bill No. 4798 proposes to declare August 11 of every year a special working holiday in Ilagan City, Isabela to commemorate its charter day anniversary. (Apple Buenaventura)
