ENERGY COMMITTEE: Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, chair of the Senate Committee on Energy, expresses caution on plans to revive the dilapidated Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) during a public hearing held at the Philippine Senate on Wednesday, August 31, 2016. Gatchalian cited safety concerns and lack of technological capabilities as critical issues of the controversial plant, which he said, has yet to produce a single megawatt of electricity since it was completed in 1984. “At this point our country simple has not developed the necessary technical expertise to operate BNPP or any modern nuclear power plant in a safe and cost-efficient manner,” according to Gatchalian.
