HONTIVEROS TO FAELDON: WHEN WILL YOU RESIGN?

Akbayan Senator Risa Hontiveros on Monday grilled Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director Nicanor Faeldon on apparent irregularities in the implementation of the Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) law, saying that the potential merits of a good measure are being corrupted by preferential treatment of certain high profile inmates, most notably convicted rapist and murderer Antonio Sanchez.

During the hearing of the Senate committee on justice, Hontiveros asked Faeldon point blank when he would leave his post.

"Sa ganitong kaliwa't kanan na kapalpakan, pagkukulang tungkol sa GCTA, mga importante pero simpleng tanong na mahirap sagutin dito sa komite na dapat alam na alam n'yo agad, kelan po kayo magre-resign sa inyong puwesto bilang BuCor head, Usec?" Hontiveros asked.

Faeldon replied that he would defer that to the appointing authority, President Rodrigo Duterte.

When pressed by Hontiveros, asking his own opinion whether he should leave his post or not, Faeldon said that he will not resign.

"I believe no," Faeldon said.

"You believe no? Bakit po? Do you believe you're doing a good job?" Hontiveros asked again.

"Yes, Ma'am," Faeldon answered.

"You believe that you're doing a good job? So far, ang lumalabas sa committee hearing na ito would point in the opposite direction," Hontiveros fired back.

Hontiveros then asked Faeldon to read Section 6 of Republic Act 10952, the penal clause of GCTA law.

"Section 6 of the law imposes a penalty of one (1) year imprisonment, a fine of One hundred thousand pesos (P100,000.00) and perpetual disqualification to hold office to any public officer or employee who violates the provisions of measure.
