Statement of Sen. Francis Pangilinan, President of the Liberal Party, on the passing away of Ghazali Jaafar, 1st Vice Chair of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front
May Ghazali Jaafar's death inspire enhanced peace efforts in Mindanao: Sen. Kiko

Our deepest condolences to the family and comrades of Ghazali Jaafar, the warrior who died a peacemaker.

He recognized that peace is not simply the absence of war. He acknowledged that peace is about how people lived their every day in pursuit of the best for the community and the future. He knew that peace in Mindanao means progress for the entire country.

And he lived knowing that peace is not only an outcome, but also a process that needed the participation of as many stakeholders as possible, including not only of the warriors on both sides or of the Bangsamoro people, but also of regular folk and indigenous and settler communities.

From being first chair of the MILF peace panel who signed the general cessation of hostilities between government and the MILF in Cagayan de Oro City in July 1997 to becoming a newly-appointed member of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) and nominated Speaker of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) just last month, Ghazali Jaafar knew that peace is a worthy life-long goal.

May his death inspire enhanced peace efforts in the island of Mindanao, that would mean better lives for all, especially Filipino children.

Inna ilillah wa inna ilaihi rajiun!
