Otso Diretso bodes well in Chinese year of the pig: Sen. Kiko

Gong xi fa cai! Translated from Mandarin, I'm told it means "wishing you great happiness and prosperity."

Kaligayahan at kasaganaan. Yan ang wish ko di lang para sa mga may ninunong Tsino o mga Chinoy, yan din ang wish ko sa lahat ng Pinoy.

That today, Chinese New Year, is a holiday in the Philippines is testament to the bond we share with our neighbor -- a bond that reminds us of the many cultures and faiths that have shaped our collective identity as a nation, a bond that should engender tolerance, fairness, and respect.

Pagpaparaya, pagiging patas, at paggalang. Yan ang tunay na mga batayan ng maayos na relasyon sa kapwa tao, sa kapwa bayan.

From the Chinese culture, Filipinos have also come to believe that eight is the luckiest number. Again I'm told that this is because eight in Mandarin which is pronounced as 'ba' sounds like 'fa' (in gong xi fa cai), which means prosperity.

Let me as campaign manager of Otso Diretso (which literally means Straight Eight) point out how wonderfully auspicious that is to our team of eight senatorial candidates: Gary Alejano, Bam Aquino, Chel Diokno, Samira Gutoc, Pilo Hilbay, Romy Macalintal, Mar Roxas, and Erin Tañada.

But in the end, the voter is king or queen, because as our slogan goes: Mas maunlad na bukas, boto mo ang lunas.
