Senate commends Pacquiao for defending WBA Welterweight crown

The Senate today adopted a resolution commending Senator Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao for successfully defending his World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight title on January 19, 2019, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

Pacquiao beat boxer Adrien "The Problem" Broner by unanimous decision. His match with Broner was the first defense of his WBA welterweight title after defeating Lucas Matthysse in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in July 2018.

All senators who were made co-authors of Senate Resolution 992 upon the motion of Majority Leader Juan Miguel "Migz" Zubiri, agreed with Senator Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III, who introduced the measure, when he said that Pacquiao once again proved to the world why he is the well-loved Filipino King of the Ring, the '"Pambansang Kamao" when he successfully defended his World Boxing Association (WBA) Welterweight Title, beating Broner by unanimous decision.

The senators further commended their colleague "for bringing honor and glory to the Philippines, spurring the Filipino pride, and inspiring people of all walks of life that victory comes at any age for those who work hard, persevere, and have faith."

"With every victory, Pacquiao exemplifies Filipino values of love for God, love for family, love for the people, as well as humility, and magnanimity," the resolution also said.

At 40 years of age, Pacquiao, the only 8-division world champion in boxing history and the only senator with a boxing world title, displayed excellent boxing form and was far more active than his 29-year old opponent, throwing 568 punches compared to Broner's 295 to claim the 61st victory of his remarkable career.
