Sen. Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan congratulates Sen. Leila De Lima on the Amnesty International award

We are proud to highlight the distinction given to Senator Leila de Lima as the most distinguished individual human rights defender from the rights watchdog Amnesty International.

Senator De Lima is worthy of the accolade, as much as she deserves to be free from unjust detention and political persecution from this administration. The award is a great moment for her fight against the abuses of the administration, and at the same time, a message of hope for the victims of human rights violations.

After more than a year, she is still awaiting arraignment on false drug-related charges. She has been denied not only of her rights as a prisoner, but her rights as mother to her children. While other jailed political personalities have been granted furlough during special family occasions, Senator De Lima's request to attend the graduation of her son was turned down.

Her indefatigable spirit and her passion to continue being the voice of the voiceless Filipinos whose rights are trampled are what keep her going. The recognition from Amnesty International will no doubt help her carry on.
