Villanueva condemns killing of Pinay OFW found in freezer in Kuwait

Senator Joel Villanueva on Friday condemned the killing of a Filipina household worker whose body was found inside a freezer in a locked apartment in Kuwait.

"We strongly condemn the brutal killing of another Filipina whose body was discovered in a freezer where it may have been kept for over a year. How many more are being brutalized?" said Villanueva, chair of the Senate committee on labor, employment, and human resources development.

"We are outraged by this latest horrible crime against our overseas Filipino workers. We should stop sending our kababayans to countries where they are not being treated properly," the senator stressed.

Villanueva also backed President Rodrigo Duterte's declaration on Friday night that the deployment ban to Kuwait will still be in effect.

"We support the President's call to continuously ban the deployment of OFWs to Kuwait. Our primary concern should be the lives and safety of our workers. We should not wait for another OFW to die for us to act on this," Villanueva said.

Villanueva further reiterated his call urging the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to prepare its contingency plan for OFWs who will be affected by the deployment ban to Kuwait.

"We have to prepare a contingency plan such as facilitation for repatriation, employment placement here, livelihood training or redeployment to other countries in case the OFWs still want to work abroad," Villanueva said.
