Senate creates special committee to study, examine rehabilitation of Marawi City

The Senate adopted a resolution today creating a special committee to assess and review the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Marawi City.

Senate President Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III, who introduced Senate Resolution 457, said the special committee would be tasked to study and investigate the extent of damaged properties in Marawi City and the extent of its reconstruction and rehabilitation.

"The special committee would assess and investigate the extent of damage to the properties, infrastructure and facilities, such as roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, building and other structures in Marawi City," the resolution said.

"It will also study the estimated cost of construction and rehabilitation of the damaged properties, infrastructure and facilities or other matters that may be necessary for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Marawi City," the resolution added.

According to the resolution, the ongoing Marawi crisis resulted in major, if not total, damage to property, infrastructure, and facilities such as road, bridges, schools, hospitals, building and other structures which will require extensive repair, rehabilitation and reconstruction works and activities.

As of July 1, the resolution added, a total of 389,300 individuals were displaced in Marawi City.

"These people need all the help they can receive from the government and the private sector to rebuild their lives by starting to rebuild their home city," the resolution said.

"We hereby resolved to create a special committee tasked to study, review, asses, examine, investigate and inquire into the matters relating to the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Marawi City," the resolution concluded.
