PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHER HAILED FOR SELFLESS SUPPORT TO HER STUDENTS

As classes opened, Sen. Grace Poe urged the country's teachers to serve as beacons of perseverance and commitment like one public school mentor who exemplified dedication and compassion toward her students.

At an event that gathered some 100 teachers at the Asian Institute of Management in Makati City, Tuesday, Poe, a former school teacher herself, said, "Tayong mga guro ang ikalawang magulang ng mga bata at magigiting na instrumento sa paghubog sa kanila upang sila ay maging responsable at mabuting mamamayan ng bansa."

In sharing her insights, Poe cited Noemi Bautista, a public school teacher of 20 years, who would give her own money so that her students would get by in their schooling.

Bautista, a mother of four, recalled how she brought extra "baon" for her poor students who go to school hungry. She also bought learning materials from her own pocket, a challenge that many public school teachers face every school year.

Poe gave Bautista, who is set to finish her PhD, tokens of encouragement in the latter's tireless pursuit to raise well-rounded and honorable individuals.

"Teachers mold us and in the process, shape our future. Every support must be extended to them," stressed Poe, who is co-author of Republic Act 10743, which sets October 5 as National Teachers' Day.

In her speech, Poe also called on teachers to be at the forefront of leading students to be more involved in helping address society's problems and lending support to the vulnerable, especially during critical times.
