LP PRESIDENT SEN. PANGILINAN ON DEATH PENALTY PASSING ON THIRD READING

We are saddened that the minority in the House was not given the chance to debate the bill in full. Without the benefit of a full debate, we are now in the dark as to the compelling reasons that merit a constitutional return of the death penalty.

It is unfortunate that most of the people's representatives voted for a bill that is proven worldwide to not work in reducing crime, and that overwhelmingly victimizes the poor and powerless.

We maintain that death penalty is cruel, degrading, and inhuman.

We commit to stopping the death penalty in the Senate.

We commit to modernizing our judiciary to ensure the certainty of punishment as the response to lawlessness and disregard for the rule of law. We propose to fill up vacancies in our courts and prosecution service; reduce to (a maximum) of 2 years instead of 6 years the average case life of court cases; and increase the conviction rate of criminal cases.
