Cayetano: Du30 gov't will extend legal aid to OFWs in US

The Duterte government will do all it can to provide assistance to Filipinos in the United States who may be affected by the country's new immigration policies, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano assured.

The senator made the clarification on Monday (Philippine time) in reaction to remarks of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in the US to President Rodrigo Duterte's recent statement about undocumented Filipinos.

Cayetano said the context of Duterte's remark was merely to affirm the Philippine government's non-interference in domestic affairs of the US government.

The senator assured OFWs that the administration is currently holding dialogues with its counterparts to ensure due process for them.

"Ayaw lang ng Pangulo na diktahan ang Amerika kung ano ang immigration policy nito, dahil ayaw din nating diktahan tayo. But it doesn't mean that the President doesn't care," he stressed.

The senator cited the recent clarification made by US State Department acting spokesman Mark Toner that Filipinos remain welcome in the United States and that the Philippines was not among the countries of concern by the Trump administration.
