DILG ASSURES P100M INITIAL ALLOCATION FOR PLEBS REACTIVATION

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) has committed to allocate P100-million as initial provision for the nationwide reactivation of the People's Law Enforcement Board (PLEB) for every municipality and legislative district in the cities.

DILG made the commitment in response to Senator Richard J. Gordon's call for the implementation of the PLEB as provided for in Section 43 of Republic Act No. 6975 or the Department of Interior and Local Government Act of 1990.

Gordon pointed out that the law calls for the creation of the PLEBS which will have jurisdiction to hear and decide citizen's complaints or cases filed before it against erring members of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

"When we create a law here, it must be implemented. Otherwise, it will become just another dead letter law. We must have some appropriation for PLEBS and implement it immediately. I made and worked that the law passed even when I was not yet a senator so that people will have an independent body to file a complaint with against erring and abusive policemen," he said during the deliberation on the DILG budget.

The DILG stated that it will allocate P100 million from its total budget and obtain additional allocation from the local government units to ensure that PLEBS will be implemented.

Gordon also pointed to the need to amend the PLEBS law to ensure it continues to be responsive to the needs of the times.
