VILLANUEVA URGES BIG ESTABLISHMENTS TO REGULARIZE 'ENDO' WORKERS

Citing the first 100 days accomplishment report of the Duterte Administration presented by the Department of Labor and Employment, Senator Joel Villanueva on Wednesday has commended 195 establishments who voluntarily regularized 10,532 workers.

Among the establishments who regularized their workers are SM Malls and 7/11 convenience stores which regularized 4,800 and 800 employees, respectively.

"We laud the government's efforts to stop endo as well as the participation of some private establishments which have already regularized their contractual workers. Other private companies must follow suit," Villanueva said.

Villanueva is author of Senate Bill No. 1116 which seeks to ensure security of tenure, protect workers' welfare by ensuring regularity of salary and benefits, and protect their right to organize.

"We have to put safeguards against blurring of employer-employee relationship and the circumvention on the law on security of tenure. A law is urgently needed that will protect and regularize workers and will ensure their entitlement to social benefits and protection," the senator emphasized.

Villanueva, who chairs the Senate committee on labor, employment and human resources development, is set to hold the next 'endo' hearing on October 13, Thursday.

Among those invited are government agencies including the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and Cooperative Development Authority (CDA); private sector such as the Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP), Federation of Philippine Industries (FPI), and Philippine Association of Legitimate Service Contractors (PALSCON); and members of the academe. Representatives of SM Retail, Inc. and Robinsons Mall are also expected to attend the upcoming hearing.
