Senator Risa Hontiveros on Senator Koko Pimentel's election as new Senate President

I would like to extend my warm congratulations to the new Senate President, Senator Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III. I am confident that his leadership will push for a strong and independent Senate, which will allow for critical collaboration with the Executive and our counterparts from the House of Representatives.

I've known Senator Koko since college when we fought for democracy after the assassination of Senator Benigno Aquino and during the 1986 snap elections. With Senate President Koko's solid track record such as having chaired the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights, there is no question to his capacity and vision to lead this august chamber.

I also laud the peaceful leadership transition at the Senate and the professionalism displayed by all aspirants to the Senate Presidency. I particularly praise Senator Alan Peter Cayetano's decision to give way to ensure a Senate that is united and capable of responding to the challenges under the new administration.

Lastly, I give my salute to outgoing Senate President "Manong" Frank Drilon, for a job well done. That he remains part of the Senate leadership as its new Pro Tempore, is a testament to his invaluable service to the institution.

I look forward to working with the new Senate leadership to fulfill the fresh mandate that the Filipino people gave to the new government.
