GUINGONA REMINDS PUBLIC TO COOPERATE WITH GOV'T AGENCIES AS SEVERE TROPICAL STORM "NONA" ARRIVES WITH INTENSE RAINS

AS Severe Tropical Storm (STS) "Nona" (international name "Melor") enters the country with threat of intense rains, the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) and other concerned agencies are on steady alert and prepared to mitigate the ravages of the typhoon.

"The government's disaster preparedness and response agencies are closely coordinating with one another to diminish the possible damages of Nona. Now, we ask all residents of affected provinces to please cooperate and take the necessary precautions to allay the storm's impact on your properties, and most especially your lives," Senator TG Guingona III stated.

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) has advised local government units (LGUs) to activate pre-disaster monitoring teams and directed local chief executives (LCEs) to comply with disaster-related protocols. Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has already prepositioned P25 million in standby funds along with sizeable numbers of food and non-food packs for any possible emergency. As for the Department of Health (DOH), all health personnel and medical team are on stand-by and ready for deployment.

As forecasted in PAGASA's 5 a.m. bulletin, "Nona" has maintained its intensity as it passed closely to Northern Samar early Monday afternoon, and is expected to strike land in Sorsogon this evening.
