Sen. Marcos cites crucial role of BHW in delivery of basic health services

Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" R. Marcos, Jr. today highlighted the crucial role barangay health workers play in the delivery of basic health services to their communities.

"Now, more than ever, we realize the significance and the need for the services of our Barangay Health Workers," Marcos said in his speech at the Barangay Health Workers Congress in the province of Pangasinan held in the city of Urdaneta today.

He noted that with the country's population breaching the 100 million mark increasing numbers of Filipinos suffering from various health problems and the high cost of medicine and doctor's fees, the ordinary people depend on BHWs to attend to their health concerns.

Marcos noted that despite the heavy responsibilities and massive number of people BHWs serve they receive meager benefits, in part due to the inadequate budget of most of the country's local government units.

As chairman of the Senate Local Government Committee, Marcos said he has been looking for ways to help LGU's, in particular to increase their share in the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA).

In addition Marcos cited his bill providing retirement benefits for barangay officials and workers, including the BHW, currently under plenary deliberation in the Senate.

"I assure you that I am giving top priority to this vital legislation so it can be enacted into law as soon as possible," Marcos said.
