PLANS FOR 2016 WILL BE SHAPED BY NP DECISION--SEN. MARCOS

Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" R. Marcos, Jr. today said his decision to run for a higher office or seek re-election as a senator in the 2016 elections will be shaped by the Nacionalista Party (NP).

Asked at the "Kapihan sa Diamond Hotel" media forum if he would run for president in 2016, Marcos replied: "It is a party decision what we are going to do; it's not something that I can dictate to the Nacionalista Party."

He explained that the NP will "have to find consensus as to what we are going to do as a party, which will more or less give an idea of what I should do or can do."

In deferring to the NP's decision, he stressed that any candidate running for a national position needs the support of a political party. "You cannot really run a successful national campaign without a party because you need to have that kind of presence, that kind of machinery," he said.

However, with the current political situation still very fluid, Marcos said NP has yet to firm up its 2016 plans. "We have come to a different kind of political cycle now," Marcos noted, wherein parties do not have a clear consensus on their plans less than a year before the elections.

He said this is the reason why no political party, including the administration's Liberal Party, has come up with a complete list of candidates for President and Vice President in the 2016 elections.

Until the political situation becomes clearer, Marcos said he will keep his options open.
