Sen.Pia Cayetano: Philippines hailed by global health leaders for RH Law passage

An assembly of global health leaders has recognized the Philippines for passing a landmark law that would increase people's access to family planning and reproductive health services.

The Philippines, together with Uruguay and Senegal, were chosen as this year's recipients of the Resolve Awards in ceremonies led by the Aspen Institute on the sidelines of the 68th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland last week.

Senator Pia S. Cayetano, principal sponsor of the Reproductive Health Law (Republic Act 10354), accepted the award on behalf of the Philippine government.

The award was handed by Dr. Marleen Temmerman, Director of the Family, Reproductive Health and Research Department of the World Health Organization.

Cayetano shared the recognition with her fellow advocates who worked hard for many years to pass the RH Law.

"It was difficult but at the same time the most meaningful, and [it brought] the sweetest victory," she recounted her experience, which included defending the bill both on the Senate floor and before the Supreme Court.

"My term comes to an end in about a year but I will continue to be advocating for RH outside the halls of Congress." the senator said.

The Resolve Awards is given every year to countries that have made progress towards the goal of universal reproductive health.
