Statement of Senator Nancy Binay on the 36th National
Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week

I join the rest of the Filipino nation as we celebrate the 36th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week.

We highlight during this week the efforts done by government and other sectors to address issues concerning persons with disabilities (PWDs) and recognize their role in nation building.

The growing presence and involvement of PWDs in matters of national importance is an indication of their resolve to participate in significant social, economic and political issues affecting our country today. And we can help by providing them the means to participate in these issues.

We have filed Senate Resolution No. 513 which aims to make the Senate a PWD-friendly institution by urging the body to provide sign language interpreters in Senate sessions and committee hearings. By providing sign language interpreters in hearings and sessions we further PWD rights, especially their participation in development issues and concerns.

Just like the sublime paralytic, the hero Apolinario Mabini, who did not let his disability drag him down, but instead rose to greater heights - we can help our PWD brothers and sisters uplift their lives and become productive citizens by lending a supporting hand.
