Grace Poe commends Filipino journalist

Sen. Grace Poe filed Senate Resolution 629 lauding National Union of Journalists of the Philippines chair Rowena Paraan, who has been chosen as one of the "100 Information Heroes" by the France-based Reporters Sans Frontieres (Reporters Without Borders).

"Paraan is a living legacy to a profession widely considered as a dangerous profession. She is highly regarded for her active role in defending press freedom and in upholding the rights of media practitioners," said Poe in her resolution.

The list of "100 Information Heroes" comprises men and women from 65 nations, who, through their courageous work or activism, have helped promote the freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas as enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The global press freedom watchdog, for the first time, published a list of profiles of "100 Information Heroes" to show that the fight for freedom of information requires not only active support for the victims of abuses but also the promotion of those who can serve as models.

Earlier, Poe urged Philippine National Police Chief Alan Purisima to take immediate action on the latest threat to the life of dzRJ and Saksi reporter Celestino "Jojo" Sicat, following the murder of journalist Ruby Garcia in Cavite.
