Pimentel condemns reporter's slay, seeks speedy resolution of case

Senator Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III today condemned the recent killing of journalist Rubylita Garcia of the daily tabloid Remate, saying attacks against members of the media have no place in a free and democratic country.

Pimentel, who is also the chairman of the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights, also sought speedy resolution of the crime which was committed right inside the home of the slain reporter in Bacoor City in the province of Cavite.

He asked the leadership of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to vigorously pursue the investigation until the alleged assailants are brought before the bar of justice, especially now that a ranking police official was being alluded to as the alleged "brains" behind the killing.

"I strongly condemned this latest brazen attack against a member of the media. I ask the PNP to spare no one in solving this case," said Pimentel.

Pimentel said police authorities should exert extra efforts to solve attacks against journalists, lawyers, environmentalists and activists, noting that the recent killing of a prominent Cebu lawyer and his two companions has remained unsolved.
