Statement of Sen. Nancy Binay on Nelson Mandela's passing

Nelson Mandela served as an inspiration and a beacon of hope not only to the people of South Africa during the struggle to end the dark days of apartheid but to every nation, rich and poor.

His simplicity, grace and passion will continue to live inside those who believe in democracy and equality of all persons -- regardless of color, religion or beliefs.

My compassion and prayers go to this great man who inspired the world. A man who gave courage to the oppressed people. A man who championed peace.

Together with the Filipino people, I extend my sympathies to his great nation, who lost a leader and a visionary, and to his family who lost a husband, a father, a grandfather.

Farewell, Madiba--you have selflessly served humankind well.
