ANGARA SEEKS REINFORCEMENT OF PH CAMPUS SAFETY

Senator Juan Edgardo "Sonny" Angara wants to beef up the security of students in higher education institutions amid the steady increase in crime rate in campuses all over the country.

Angara's Senate Bill 197, or The Campus Safety Act, seeks to establish a Crime Prevention Committee (CPC) in all colleges and universities tasked to formulate policies and strategies that will help protect students from threats to their safety and security.

"We must ensure a safe and secure environment for students to pursue their studies within these institutions without fear for their physical well-being," the neophyte senator said, as he added: The bill should be the state's response to the sentimental clamor from parents and students for tighter campus security.

Under the proposed measure, the CPC shall formulate and implement crime prevention strategies and programs concerning campus safety and campus law enforcement to prevent the incidence of theft, robbery, rape and other forms of violence within and outside the school.

Data on the number of arrests for crimes occurring on campus including liquor law and drug abuse violations, possession of weapons, and other criminal offenses must also be made available by the committee.

"It is necessary for both students and their parents or guardians to have access to information with regard to campus crime statistics, as well as crime prevention plans to equip them with an informed choice as to which school to send their children," Angara emphasized.
