Senate approves construction of fish ports, upgrading of hospitals

The Senate approved on third and final reading eight bills seeking the construction of fish ports and establishment of cold storage facilities in the Provinces of Camarines Sur, Northern Samar, Cebu, Pangasinan, Surigao del Norte, Sulu and Pampanga.

Approved were House Bill 201 for the construction of fish port in Barangay Sabang, Calabanga, Camarines Sur; House Bill 3080 for the construction of fish port in San Vicente, Northern Samar; House Bill 3208 for the construction of fish port in Barangay Hagnaya, San Remigio, Cebu; House Bill 4149 for the construction of fish port in Minglanilla, Cebu; House Bill 4445 for the construction of fish port in Dagupan, Pangasinan; House Bill 4697 for the establishment of fish port and cold storage facility in Dapa, Surigao del Norte; House Bill 5009 for the construction of fish ports in Tongkil, Tapul, Lugus, Kalinggalan, Caluang and Siasi in Sulu and House Bill 6171 for the establishment of fish port and cold storage facility in the Sasmuan, Pampanga).

Sen. Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr., chairman of the Committee on Public Works and sponsor of the bills, said the construction of the fish ports will boost the country's aquamarine industry, attract traders from nearby countries and improve the livelihood of the residents where the ports are located.

Meanwhile, the Senate also approved on third and final reading four house bills seeking the upgrading of facilities and professional healthcare in four hospitals nationwide.

Approved were House Bill 3840, which sought the increase of bed capacity at the Region I Medical Center in Dagupan City, Pangasinan, from 300 beds to 600 beds; House Bill 1801, which sought the increase of bed capacity at the Eversly Childs Sanitarium Hospital in Cebu from 50 beds to 100 beds; House Bill 425, which sought the increase of bed capacity at the Zamboanga City Medical Center from 250 beds to 500 beds and House Bill 5396, which sought to establish a municipal hospital in the Municipality of Tanudan, Kalinga-Apayao.

Sen. Pia Cayetano, chairperson of the Committee of Health and Demography and sponsor of the bills, said that increasing the bed capacity of the three hospitals will greatly improve the delivery of health services in the area while the establishment of the municipal hospital in Tanudan will make health services accessible to the people.
