Transport groups hail Cayetano's call to reduce VAT on oil

"Malaking bagay kung mababawasan ang VAT sa gasolina kaya sinusuportahan namin si Senador Alan Cayetano dahil ipapaglaban niya ito." (It will really mean a lot to our livelihood if the VAT on oil is reduced. We support Senator Alan Cayetano because this is what he has been fighting for.)

This was the statement given by various transport groups as they gave a resounding endorsement of Senator Alan Cayetano's reelection bid.

Cayetano has been calling for a decrease in the value added tax (VAT) on oil as part of his plan to address the problem of high prices plaguing the country. "This is an issue that must be at the top of the priority list of the administration because it goes to the heart of one of the biggest concerns of Filipinos: high prices," he explained.

Even during the 15th Congress, Cayetano has already been calling for such a move. His previous call to open the books of various oil companies to check if they are indeed charging the correct amount of prices for their oil products has also resonated well with transport groups all over the country. As part of his Listening Tour, Cayetano has been able to hold discussions with transport groups such as the Taguig Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (TODA) and the jeepney and tricycle drivers of Dagupan City, Pangasinan among many others.

Cayetano recalled the plight of the transportation sector that he was able to talk to during one of his Listening Tour stops in Dagupan, Pangasinan. "They revealed to me that they are losing more than half of their day's earnings just to pay for gas and boundary charges leaving them with just a few hundred pesos to take home," he said.

Cayetano stressed that reducing the VAT on oil will be an effective tool in ensuring that prices of commodities as a whole are driven down - an event that will truly benefit every Filipino family. "When the price of oil goes down, transportation cost will too. When transportation cost goes down, the prices of commodities will too," he said.
