INSTALL CULTURAL CENTERS IN FILIPINO
COMMUNITIES ABROAD--ANGARA

Senator Edgardo J. Angara highlighted the importance of remembering and honoring the Filipino heritage by our countrymen living abroad during the 2nd Global Summit of Filipinos in the Diaspora organized by the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO).

During the Summit, the Virtual Sentro Rizal was unveiled by the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and CFO.

The Sentro Rizal is a collection of Filipiniana named after Dr. Jose Rizal. It was created under R.A. 10066, or the National Cultural Heritage Act of 2009 which was authored by Angara.

The Virtual Sentro Rizal, meanwhile, is the digital counterpart to the established exhibits all over the world. It is composed of around 150 entries showcasing the country's arts, culture and language through videos, audio recordings, photos and detailed articles.

"This Virtual Sentro Rizal project is a prime opportunity to leave a lasting cultural impact and legacy for the technologically-savvy youth of the Philippines," said Angara.

Moreover, according to Angara, author of the laws creating the NCCA and the National Museum, cultural centers like the Sentro Rizal should be established in every city with a high population of Filipinos such as Los Angeles and Chicago in the US and Toronto in Canada. Branches of the Sentro Rizal have already been established in Spain, the Czezh Republic, Oman and Laos.

"These centers will serve as reminders for the millions of Filipinos who are studying, working and living abroad, helping them maintain their culture and identity," said the veteran legislator.
