STATEMENT OF SEN. TG GUINGONA ON MALAMPAYA FUND PROBE "MASHED POTATO PROJECTS OF PALAWAN"

Today, the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee started the investigation of anomalies in 'mashed potato' infrastructure projects funded by Palawan's P2.6-billion share of Malampaya funds.

Although costing scores of millions of pesos each, these projects involve incomplete and muddy roads and bridges, and school buildings left unfinished.

Broadcaster Doc Gerry Ortega tried to ask questions about the controversial projects and lost his life in the process on January 24, 2011. As we ask the same questions again, it is auspicious that we also observe today the second anniversary of Doc Ortega's death.

The concerned citizens of Palawan led by Bishop Pedro Arigo charge that, through these projects, graft and corruption in the magnitude of plunder have been committed by some Palawan government officials. Partial findings of the Commission on Audit (COA) lend substance to these accusations.

We are here to ferret out the truth: to find out if irregularities have indeed been committed, to list down the names of those responsible, and to ensure that they are made liable for acts or omissions that violate the law.

As we carry out our task, we ask the people to join us. We ask those in the know of mashed potato projects to contribute their knowledge so justice could be served. We ask those who possess vital information and evidence to bare the pieces to the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee. Now is the time to do it.
