SENATOR PIMENTEL HAILS PH CHESS PLAYERS

Senator Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III, PDP Laban President, today praised the "outstanding performance" of the Philippine chess team at the 40th Chess Olympiad currently underway at Istanbul, Turkey.

"After a dismal performance at the London Olympics, our chess players are giving Philippine sports something to cheer about with their gritty performance against the best in the world," Pimentel exclaimed after learning of the Philippine team defeated highly-regarded Bulgaria during the chess olympiad's sixth round and secured a draw against powerhouse Hungary in the following round.

The stunning performance secured for the Philippines a share of the fourth to eight spot in the standings behind chess heavyweights Russia, China and Ukraine going to the 8th round. The Philippines was seeded 35th and is performing way above the experts' prediction and expectation.

"This is exactly one of the sports we need to harness to improve our chances in international competition." Pimentel explained that unlike basketball that requires height, Filipinos have excelled in chess.

"We really should have a comprehensive review of our sports program and priorities. With our limited resources, we should focus on events that highlight our potentials and advantages." The senator from Mindanao is a chess player himself and chairs the Senate committee of professional sports.

"I urge Filipinos to continue to support and pray for our Philippine chess contingent in Turkey. We should be proud of them!"
