Senate commends Manila women's team for grabbing
Big League Softball championship

The Senate yesterday adopted a resolution commending the Manila Women's Softball team for winning the Big League Softball World Series Championship held in Michigan, United States of America last August 9.

Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, sponsor of Senate Resolution 837, said the 13-member team outplayed and outsmarted their Western counterparts to bring the trophy home. "Unmatched by bigger, better-equipped and better funded opponents, the Manila Softball Team representing not only the Philippines but the whole Asia-Pacific regions, took home the country's first Big League Softball World Series Title," Trillanes said.

"Our Philippine team out-gunned, out-played and out-smarted their opponents from the Westechester California team, through a lopsided 14-2 victory," he added.

" This exceptional performance and unparalleled achievement deserves to be congratulated and its officials and players deserve the highest commendation for the honor, pride and recognition they brought to our country and people," he said.

Despite the odds against them, Trillanes said, the team showed the world the perseverance, moral courage and competitive spirit of the Filipinos.

According to Trillanes, the team had only 13 members unlike their opponents' full complement of 15 players due to limited funding. They also played through jetlag, arriving at the venue a day before the tournament proper, he said.

He said the Manila Women's Softball team as well as the team's officials, players and staff, deserve to be recognized for their achievement in sports. (Pilar Macrohon, PRIB)
