Legarda: 2010 to bring end to misgovernance

Senator Loren Legarda today called for an end to "tragedies, continuing corruption and misgovernance" that characterized the year 2009 and vowed to "reverse and correct the situation" in 2010.

In her New Year's message, Loren said: "We recoiled in horror over the November 23 massacre in Maguindanao, the inevitable outcome of the reign of terror unleashed by political warlordism."

The senator also took note of recent natural calamities: "We confronted death and destruction from flooding caused by back-to-back typhoons, and realized how unprepared we were for climate change."

The senator said she was aware of growing restiveness among Filipinos: "Apart from the breakdown of the rule of law and the lack of respect for human rights, we witnessed as well widespread dissatisfaction brought about by worsening poverty and hunger."

Despite all this, Loren said, the "new year should bring about better governance, food on the table especially for the poor, and jobs for the unemployed. And we must take decisive steps to win the battle versus climate change."

Loren pointed out that 2010 will be another watershed in the country's political history as Filipino voters elect a new set of leaders from the national to the local levels.

Loren urged everyone to exercise their right of suffrage, and to vote wisely.

"We must join hands so that we can have honest, orderly and peaceful elections, and that the results truly reflect the people's will," Loren said.
