WOMAN POWER STRONG IN NP - LOREN

Sen. Loren Legarda, NP-NPC vice presidential candidate, observed yesterday that with six female candidates "woman power is strong" in the NP national ticket headed by presidential candidate Sen. Manny Villar.

Loren said that throughout history women have "fought and worked alongside with the men to make a better world. Harnessing woman power to solve our current problems like poverty, hunger, illiteracy, homelessness, cruelty, the insurgencies, climate change and environmental degradation would intensify the efforts toward their solution."

Loren pointed out that in Europe, the United States and China progress accelerated when woman's liberation accelerated and women became more prominent in public affairs. She mentioned Queen Elizabeth I of England, Catherine the Great of Russia, and in modern times, Eleanor Roosevelt of the United States, Madame Sun Yat Sen of China, Margaret Thatcher of the United Kingdom, Golda Meir of Israel and Mother Teresa of India.

In the Philippines, she cited the historic role played by women in fighting for freedom and justice like Gabriela Silang, Princess Urduja, Melchora Aquino (Tandang Sora), Rizal's mother, Teodora Alonzo, Bonifacio's wife, Gregoria de Jesus, and Josefa Llanes Escoda, World War II heroine, among many others.

Loren said that the women in the NP national ticket would "carry on the traditions and continue the struggles of Filipino women patriots in Philippine history, for the advancement of freedom, human rights, social welfare and economic progress."

The women in the NP ticket headed by Villar are Senator Legarda, who is running for vice president, and senatorial bets reelectionist Senators Miriam Defensor Santiago and Pia Cayetano, Gabriela Party-List Congresswoman Liza Maza, OFW rights advocate Susan Ople, daughter of former Sen. Blas Ople, and human rights activist Atty. Gwen Pimentel, daughter of Sen. Aquilino Pimenel Sr.

"Women are more soft-heated and compassionate than men, and with their additional passion can help solve our problems of poverty, environmental rot, disunity and insurgency, and bring peace, cooperation and harmony to our divided land," said Loren.
