CHIZ TO DOLE : ACTIVATE EMERGENCY EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM

Opposition Sen. Cbiz Escudero yesterday called on the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to immediately activate the emergency employment fund to aid those who were affected by typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng.

In a press conference at the Senate, Escudero said DOLE can set aside a certain amount of money for those affected by the incessant floodings in northern Luzon who can be hired for a certain period of time for clean-up operations.

"This can work in two ways: DOLE can help typhoon victims during the cleanup while giving them opportunities to earn," the 40-year old senator said.

Escudero visited five flood-stricken towns in Pangasinan on Sunday and saw first-hand the plight of those affected by the flooding.

He said DOLE's emergency employment program can also help rehabilitate typhoon victims by showing them that they are not helpless during calamities such what just hit the country in the past few weeks.

He is batting for a minimum of 15 days work for those affected by the typhoons.

"This must be given top priority. DOLE must act now if the government wants to aid our countrymen now suffering from the onslaught of the two typhoons," he said.
