Tulong Villar Goes From Relief Operations to Emergency Preparedness

Tulong Villar Relief Assistance efforts, led by Nacionalista Party President Senator Manny Villar, go notches higher as super typhoon Peping gathers strength and makes its way to the country.

"We are definitely more determined to step up our assistance to Filipinos displaced by typhoon Ondoy, now that super typhoon Peping is expected to bring rains and floods over the weekend. We have to make sure that families, particularly those in evacuation centers and sites, have food and supplies even before the new typhoon comes," said Villar.

As of October 2, 2009, Tulong Villar has distributed 67,532 relief goods bundles; rescued 4,040 people; and cleaned 400 homes. This brings the total to 71,972.

"Those who are living in areas where there are still floodwaters should be the priority for evacuation since the onslaught of the new typhoon will worsen their predicament. Rescue and relief teams should extend all possible efforts to get through impassable roads to reach these people," said Villar.

Villar expressed concerns also to outbreaks of diseases in cramped evacuation sites where children and the elderly are succumbing to various illnesses. He added, "The people in evacuation centers need not only proper nourishment but medical attention as well as personal hygiene kits with soaps and alcohol to prevent the spread of communicable diseases. They should also get medicines and vaccines to strengthen their immune system."
