Press statement of Senator Loren Legarda

ON ONDOY

Ondoy is a clear manifestation of climate change. More and more, climate change will bring devastating impacts that we can no longer ignore. We need real action and we need it now.

As chairperson of the Senate Standing and Oversight Committees on Climate Change, I will hold a public hearing on the Ondoy disaster on Monday. It is important for the government to document this process before it is forgotten. People will forget about this when the water recedes and this should not happen.

What didn't work and why? How can we best prepare, from the longest to the shortest timescales, before a disaster strikes? How can we make the capital more proactive than the rest of the country? How can we effectively protect our people, their homes and livelihoods?

Reducing disaster and climate risk has become a moral imperative for governments and a social responsibility for all -- when having less in life means losing life.

This typhoon is nothing compared to what might happen soon if we do not take decisive actions now.
