Senate lends its hands to victims of typhoon 'Ondoy'

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile announced today that the Senate of the Philippines will donate a total of P1.5 million to the victims of typhoon 'Ondoy' through the ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc., GMA Kapuso Foundation, and the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC).

Enrile instructed Senate Secretary Emma Reyes to donate P500,000 each from his discretionary funds to the said organizations to support their ongoing efforts to provide immediate relief assistance for the typhoon 'Ondoy' victims.

"The loss of lives and extensive damage to property caused by Typhoon 'Ondoy' require immediate actions and cooperation from all fronts in providing relief assistance to our countrymen and we know that these organizations have the appropriate machinery to provide such," Enrile said.

Furthermore, Enrile, on behalf of the Senate, expresses condolences to the relatives of those who perished due to Typhoon 'Ondoy' and said the Senate would look into possible legislation that will help strengthen the government's disaster preparedness program.

Meanwhile, the Senate employees through the Public Assistance Center (PAC) have also initiated a fund-raising drive to gather donations in cash or kind for the victims of the typhoon. These donations will also be turned over to the three (3) organizations.

Enrile also lauded fellow senators who have conducted their own relief operations at the height of typhoon 'Ondoy'.
