I join our Muslim brothers in marking the start of the holy month of Ramadan, a time of prayer and spirituality, contemplation and brotherhood.

From first light till sundown, millions around the world gain true sympathy with those who go hungry through their sacrifice of worldly comforts.

Such voluntary deprivation is also a way of self-purification in both thought and action to prepare for further growth in one's spiritual life.

Let this renewal of commitment with the Creator be an opportunity to strengthen bonds with family and friends, bring forth kindness and generosity.

May it also repair the fissures that have divided our society, and lead to peace in Mindanao.
