LOREN TO NOGRALES: 'BURY THE DEAD'

Sen. Loren Legarda yesterday urged Speaker Prospero Nograles "to bury the dead so we can move on."

Senator Legarda was reacting to the statement of Nograles that he was not yet giving up on moves to amend the Constitution through a constituent assembly.

"The charter change movement is a virtual zombie. It has been overtaken by events, such as the rise of poverty levels, the resurgence of the Mindanao conflict, the extraordinary adulation for the late former President Corazon Aquino who opposed charter change at this time, the expensive lifestyles of people in power and the survey indicating that 66 percent of our people oppose charter change," said Loren.

"Let us, members of Congress, move on," Loren added. "Our people demand that we address the steady menacing march of hunger among our people, exacerbated by the global economic downturn, and the increasing damage and casualties caused by climate change that is spawning more destructive typhoons, floods and landslides."

Loren declared that there are many problems that the Congress must tackle like crafting a development and employment-generating budget for 2010, modernizing agriculture to improve productivity, taking care of the environment and rolling back the hunger pangs of 20 percent of Filipino families.

According to Loren, other urgent problems the Congress must tackle "are the burgeoning budgetary deficit, the low revenue collections by the bureaus of internal revenue and customs and the growing corruption in government that is discouraging local and foreign investments."

She stressed, "Let us bury the dead and move on."
