CHIZ: STANDARDIZE SALARY FOR BARANGAY OFFICIALS

Opposition Sen. Chiz Escudero called for a fair and fixed salary for barangay officials rather than a mere honorarium based on the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) given to them by LGUs

"Many barangays in cities have a higher IRA and are able to give a bigger honorarium to their officials compared to those in poorer towns with a lower IRA," he stressed during the 2nd National Convention of the Liga ng mga Barangay.

He added that while he favors giving barangay officials a wider scope of responsibility and authority despite their 24/7 schedule, they must be properly compensated by government.

Escudero also lauded barangay councils and officials for their selfless dedication to their jobs despite the low pay and irregular working hours.

"From resolving disputes among neighbors and quarrels between couples to providing health services to residents and helping accident victims, barangay officials have an unenviable task," he said

Escudero noted that they are in the frontline when it comes to the delivery of basic services to the public and yet they are only given an honorarium.

He also lauded the officials of the group, especially those from the younger generation for their contributions in making the Liga a more dynamic organization.

"It is good to know that age is not considered a factor when it comes to leadership in your group."
