HOPE AND RENEWAL

As we celebrate Easter, let this most sacred of holidays remind us of the possibilities that faith brings into our lives as individuals and as citizens.

Sometimes forgotten, however, as we renewed ties with family and friends in the past week, is the true spirit of Easter. Holy Week is supposed to be an opportunity to pause and reflect, and we are taught--by Christ's death and resurrection--that change, renewal, and rebirth are not beyond our reach. Easter, essentially, is about hope and renewal--a message that resonates among all individuals regardless of creed or religious denomination.

In the midst of a deepening economic crisis and growing distrust in our leaders and institutions, and dissatisfaction with a government more concerned with amending the Charter than addressing the more pressing problems of our people--it is easy to lose hope and give in to the kind of cynicism that breeds apathy and inaction.

We can either resign ourselves to accepting our misfortunes or choose to embrace the essence of Easter. National renewal is not a pipe dream, and it need not take a miracle for our country to rise again. It will, however, require that we continue to nurture hope in ourselves and in our country, and demand that we work together, sans our selfish interests, to turn our dreams of a better future into reality.
