KIKO TO COMELEC ON 2010 ELECTION AUTOMATION: FAILURE
IS NOT AN OPTION

Independent senator Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan on Friday warned the COMELEC of the consequences of glitches on an automated election system.

"Electoral fraud and botched automation may create an unprecedented level of uncertainty and instability," Pangilinan said.

"This may be used an excuse for adventurists to resort to extra-constitutional means to seize power, and for GMA loyalists to remain in power beyond 2010 by imposing emergency rule."

"Failure is not an option," Pangilinan reiterated.

"We challenge the COMELEC to move heaven and earth to ensure that automation succeeds in 2010," he said.

Pangilinan also encouraged the Filipino public to play a key role in ensuring fair, clean, transparent, and credible elections in 2010 and beyond.

"The citizens must not let their guard down," he exorted. "We must be extremely vigilant in safeguarding the electoral process for our constitutional democracy to survive."
