Pia: 'People simply can't trust a two-faced government'

Senator Pia S. Cayetano today said Malacañang should abandon its plot to pursue Charter change by claiming support from senators through Senate Joint Resolution No.10 which calls for the establishment of a federal system of government.

"The people simply do not trust that the Arroyo government is capable of pursuing any noble act. Everyone can see through its selfish motive to reconsolidate support in Mindanao after the MOA-AD fiasco, and at the same time hold on to power beyond 2010 by claiming support from the federalism initiative in the Senate."

Cayetano said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's pitch for federalism was obviously meant to appease Mindanao leaders who were gravely offended by her government's attempt to sign on the sly a memorandum of agreement on ancestral domain with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), which would have dismembered our national territory.

The same motive also drove the government get into a war in Mindanao with Moro rebels in North Cotabato after the Supreme Court halted the controversial MOA-AD by issuing a TRO, she added.

"Now the Arroyo government is calling for federalism as the solution to the peace problem in Mindanao. But who can trust a two-faced government that offers false peace and readily sows war at the same time?"

"After all the chaos it has caused, where's the accountability now? Who will own up for fomenting confusion and displacing hundreds of thousands of civilians?"

"The Arroyo government has blood in its hands. It is using Mindanaoans as pawns in pursuit of its self-serving agenda."
