Loren wants RP scouts honored each year

The spirit of the scouting movement must be kept alive in the Philippines to develop the Filipino youth into responsible, self-reliant and confident individuals working for the betterment of the country.

Senator Loren Legarda issued this statement yesterday as she pushed the passage of Senate Bill 2419 that would mandate the celebration of "Boy Scouting and Girl Scouting Recognition Day" in every local government unit each year.

The recognition day will be held every year within the months of September and October. Every province, city, or municipality shall conduct appropriate programs, projects and activities to give recognition to deserving scouts, partners and donors of the scouting movement.

Legarda said that the Girl Scout of the Philippines (GSP) and the Boy Scout of the Philippines (BSP) are two long standing institutions that create socially aware youths through socially meaningful activities.

However, the senator said that the scouting movement in the Philippines is lacking the support of government, especially LGUs, thus the need to rekindle the scouting movement in every town of the archipelago.

"To reaffirm the ideals, noble traditions and constructive practices of scouting, this bill mandates the celebration of a Scouting Recognition Day. Such a celebration will confirm the essential role of scouting in the upbringing of the Filipino youth," she said.

"GSP and BSP represent a concrete example of socially responsible organizations," Legarda said, adding "more so with their worldwide network, transcending the boundaries of race and ethnicity."

"They instill values essential to progress and development of communities," said Legarda, who authored SB 2419.
