KIKO CLARIFIES LEGALITY OF SNAP ELECTIONS

Following the approval of House Bill No. 3589 calling for a snap presidential election, Senate Majority Leader and Independent senator Kiko Pangilinan today clarified the legality of the proposal.

"Unless there are vacancies in both the Office of the President and the Office of the Vice President there can be no snap election under the existing provisions of the Constitution." Kiko said.

The House recently approved the bill and will be immediately forwarded to the Committee on Rules for plenary debates. The said bill was first filed during the height of the NBN ZTE deal last February.

"Charter change is necessary to effect this and when efforts to change the Constitution are underway there is no telling what amendments will be pushed for which may include term extensions and other self serving proposals. Let's not tinker with the Constitution. It will only further divide the nation already reeling from economic hardships." Kiko ended.
