ANGARA CALLS FOR PRESERVATION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE

Senator Edgardo J. Angara called for the creation of the National Heritage Commission to mandate rules concerning the preservation and protection of inherited resources, sites, old buildings, monuments, shrines and landmarks that have cultural significance and historical value.

"The Philippines is blessed with rich resources and heritage. It is sad to note that in spite of this comparative advantage, the country's share of tourist market is negligible compared to its Asian neighbors," Angara said.

He said that the efforts of the government to preserve cultural heritage sites have been inadequate and ineffective.

Angara also said that much of the country's irreplaceable structures have given way to modernization and commercialization. However, he added, the time now calls to present the country's rich cultural heritage through the promotion and preservation of these cultural heritage sites.

"Our heritage would serve as an anchor amidst the chaos that modernization brings. By preserving our heritage, we keep our integrity as a people; for our heritage is the foundation by which we can build our present," Angara said.

"By developing our cultural heritage sites, we can tap new markets and create ripple-like opportunities that would generate income and employment for our people," Angara added.

In 1992, Angara put together the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) by legislation so that there would be a lead agency to formulate policies for the development of culture and arts in the country, and to encourage artistic creation and freedom among Filipinos.
