Generals' vile remarks against Sen. Madrigal only prove they are unworthy of promotion

Senator Jamby Madrigal had invoked her right under Section 20 of the Senate rules in the fulfillment of her duty as member of the powerful Commission of Appointments (CA) against scandalous or unworthy executive designations and promotions.

Such action deserves commendation from the public whose interests the CA members ought to have in mind when confirming appointments.

All too often, promotions and appointments for generals and presidential appointees are a breeze in the CA. We may as well remember when the CA confirmed the promotion of notorious human rights violator Gen. Jovito Palparan, Jr. despite protests and pending cases.

It is understandable that some CA members and senior military officers whose promotion was deferred would be irate because they were not able to easily get what they wanted. Their slanderous statements made against the lady senator, however is not beyond reproach.

Their use of argumentum ad hominem (Latin for against the person) is an indication that they realize that Sen. Madrigal's argument is correct and cannot be refuted. After all, is it not only fair that the CA should make General Nehemias Pajarito to account to the public his alleged involvement in the 'Hello Garci' scandal or Brig. Gen. Jonathan Martir for his AWOL status in the past?

The higher position they get the more they should practice accountability. The CA must make the appointees explain satisfactorily to the public.

The sexist and vile remarks made against Sen. Madrigal are irrelevant and do not have a bearing on the former's argument that violations of law and most especially human rights violations does not qualify them for promotion.

When they resort to such attacks, we can't help but ask: Do they shoot their mouths off as fast as they shoot their guns at those who get in their way?
