KIKO ON CBCP'S REFUSAL TO ASK PGMA TO RESIGN:

"The church cannot solve the country's political problems, it will have to come from a new breed of political leaders and citizens!"

In the midst of criticisms by lawmakers and other personalities against the CBCP for refusing to call for PGMA's resignation, Senate Majority Leader and Independent senator Kiko Pangilinan today said that the church alone cannot put an end to the political impasse. For those in the political sector to expect the church to lead in reforming our politics is to admit that we cannot lead. I refuse to accept that. The national political reform effort must be led by able political leaders and active citizens.

"We cannot expect the church to solve the country's political problems. We cannot expect the church to spearhead political reforms. This will have to come from a new breed of political leaders together w/ a new breed of active citizens,"Kiko asserted.

After an emergencing meeting that stirred hopes that the CBCP would call for Pres.Arroyo to step down due to involvement in the botched ZTE NBN deal, the CBCP merely came out with a statement urging the president to take the lead in combating graft.

"Only a determined and enlightened people together with a new generation of public sector leaders with conviction, principles and vision can usher in political and economic reforms. Our public sector leaders must find new ways of confronting the nation's political woes. We must think of outside the box solutions. we cannot do the same things over and over again and expect different results. Until and unless we have more public sector leaders w/ courage& conviction, until we have leaders willing to take risks, willing to dare and to make difficult, painful decisions despite the political costs, we will not be able to solve our political woes," Kiko ended.
