To pass crucial landmark bills
'CALL FOR A SPECIAL SESSION' -- KIKO

SENATE Majority Leader Kiko Pangilinan today called on President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to order Congress to hold a special session that will tackle urgent bills pending before it, a day after both chambers of Congress adjourned sine die.

"The Senate has passed urgent pieces of legislation such as the Human Rights Compensation Bill, the historical UP Charter Bill, and the amendments to the Intellectual Property Code which would make medicines more accesible to the poor," Kiko pointed out.

"These measures are long overdue, and the benefits of these bills are crucial. There is still a chance that the House of Representatives can pass these measures before the end of June if the President calls for a special session," Kiko explained.

Kiko challenged the House leadership to display they still maintain the support of their peers by mustering enough number to reach a quorum in that special session.

"It will be a shame to delay these important measures when our representatives and Malacañang can actually do something about it. We need to carry out our duties with a sense of urgency because our people cannot wait any longer. There is no excuse for us public servants," Kiko added.

Article 15, Section 6 of the Constitution gives the president the power to call for special sessions at any time.
