STATEMENT OF SEN. MAR ROXAS ON LEMON LAW

The passage of the Lemon Law gives life to the policy of the State providing full protection to consumer rights against deceptive and unfair sales and trade practices. Finally, buyers of brand new motor vehicles of substandard quality are now provided with ample legal remedies. Consumers are now protected from being short-changed with faulty motor vehicles.

A motor vehicle is a major personal investment. It is simply injustice on the part of consumers when they unknowingly purchase a vehicle fraught with defects or faulty safety mechanisms.

Consumers are not expected to be analytical of warranty agreements crafted in legal or technical jargon. Through this measure, buyers of brand new vehicles are now secured with the guarantee that they will be compensated, even for defects not covered by warranty.

With the passage of this bill, consumers can now get full value for their money. If a consumer happens to buy a defective car, he or she is entitled to get his or her money back, or at least to get a prompt replacement.
